Brett is a 10 year old boy who was diagnosed with a rare type of brain cancer, Neurocutaneous Melanosis with Leptomeningeal Melanoma, in July of 2008. He spent most of 2008 in and out of doctor's clinics and hospitals. Currently he is residing with his family at home after a lengthy hospital stay.
Brett's parents have both been at home taking care of him and his two younger brothers. He requires care around the clock including administration of medication, bathing & changing, exercise, mental stimulation, skin care, wound care, position changes, and feedings (through his stomach tube). He has to me monitored nearly constantly for seizures, breathing trouble, and vomiting. His younger brothers (Josh, 6 and Matt, 4) are finding solace in each others company and speak affectionately of, and to, their big brother.
Brett's condition is terminal. The physicians most knowledgeable about his disease say that there is no cure and that he will not survive his illness. He has had some success with radiation/chemotherapy but it is not anticipated to last. They have led us to a clinical trial that may give us more success if chemotherapy stops working. That treatment is at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York City.
Unfortunately, Brett's insurance will not cover the cost of this treatment because it is experimental and the hospital in New York has told us that, if Brett is accepted into the clinical study, the treatment will cost an estimated $100,000. Because we want to do everything possible to help Brett live longer and better, we decided to raise the money for his treatment.
